It’s hard to find a better employee than a veteran, but often, veterans benefit from support to translate their unique military skills before attempting to connect them to jobs.

That’s where Edge4Vets comes in.

For twelve years, the Human Resiliency Institute at Fordham University has been offering the Edge4Vets jobs prep workshop series to help veterans learn how to identify their transferable skills from the military – which are enormous – and make connections to employers, including aviation employers – for a chance to apply them.

This summer, the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services partnered with Edge4Vets to expand that effort, and recently, Wounded Warriors hosted a workshop to get the new, broader program going.

In addition, Airports Council International – North America participates with Edge4Vets to accelerate veterans into airport workforces nationally. Airports in nine states, including John F. Kennedy International Airport, have hosted the program.

Thirty-four veterans participated in the Fall cohort in NYC this month, investing time and getting mentor support to learn how to create a personal PLAN4SUCCESS that can articulate their resiliency strengths. Then, the program follows up by connecting to hiring managers at Edge4Vets partner companies – including airport companies.

NYC-SHRM has joined the program and will offer free practice interviews to participants in Edge4Vets.

After publishing “Reclaiming the Sky,” a story of the courage of aviation workers on 9/11, Fordham University invited Tom to create the Human Resiliency Institute to develop resiliency training programs that reflect the healing principles of the 9/11 heroes profiled in his book. Edge4Vets is the lead program for the institute, which is housed in the Gabelli School of Business. Edge4Vets helps veterans, including those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, learn how to tap into their resiliency strengths from the military to make successful transitions to civilian life.
