Cargo Leads Effort to Bring Edge4Vets to New York Airports

Edge4Vets workshop Metropolitan Airport News
Fordham’s Human Resiliency Institute will expand its Edge4Vets jobs prep program to New York airports this spring in partnership with the NYC Dept of Veterans Services and Airports Council Int’l -NA. The plan for a kick-off workshop at Vaughn College May 22 was shared at KAAMCO’s February meeting, presided over by Phil Jensen and Joe Clabby with KAAMCO Cargo Chair Brian Cooley and Peter DeBenigno of the JFK Cargo Association.

Cargo companies play a large role in the success of New York airports, but cargo companies need a continuous stream of quality employees to accomplish that goal. That’s where adding more military veterans to the workforce can be the answer.

Nobody makes a better employee than a military veteran. They bring unique skills in work ethic, decision-making, team-building, and more to the job, but research shows veterans gain when they receive support to translate their military skills and become job-ready.

The Edge4Vets program—offered by the Human Resiliency Institute at Fordham—was created to do just that: It prepares veterans to translate their military strengths into “tools” for the civilian workplace and then connects them to HR reps at partner companies for jobs that can lead to careers.

Cargo leaders at New York airports, including KAAMCO, the JFK Cargo Association, and others, are helping to raise awareness about the effort to bring Fordham’s Edge4Vets workshop series to NY airports this spring.

ASAK Solutions, a veteran-owned company at JFK, has stepped up to join World Wide Flight Services and Corporate Loss Prevention Associates to support the project and encourage others to help launch the effort.

Vaughn College of Aeronautics will host an Edge4Vets at Airports workshop on May 22 to kick off the expansion of Edge4Vets to New York airports. The goal is to help cargo companies meet their workforce needs by hiring talented vets.

Since Fordham University introduced Edge4Vets in 2011, it has trained more than 2,500 veterans in nine states. Once the cargo model is up and running at New York airports, Airports Council Int ‘l—North America will support the project’s expansion to airports nationally.
