PANYNJ George Washington Bridge NYC
The Port Authority of NY & NJ's George Washington Bridge is the world’s busiest vehicular bridge.

In honor of Earth Month, as well as the centennial of The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Port Authority is inviting children to participate in a new poster contest with a prize worth hundreds of thousands of views: air time at the agency’s two bus facilities, including the world’s busiest bus terminal. From now until Earth Day on April 22, the Port Authority is accepting submissions of hand-drawn posters to celebrate the link between the region and Planet Earth through the physical connections made via the agency’s vehicular crossings and two bus facilities.

From now until Earth Day on April 22, the Port Authority is accepting submissions of hand-drawn posters to celebrate the link between the region and Planet Earth through the physical connections made via the agency’s vehicular crossings and two bus facilities. The contest theme, “Restore the Earth,” coincides with the name of the Port Authority’s signature infrastructure improvement project, “Restoring the George,” which is a 10-year program to repair, fortify and improve the world’s busiest vehicular bridge – the nearly 90-year-old George Washington Bridge.

Children in pre-K through grade 12 who live in New York and New Jersey are invited to submit posters that reflect the “Restore the Earth” theme while incorporating the Port Authority’s centennial and one or more of the agency’s four bridges, two tunnels or two bus facilities:

  • ·  George Washington Bridge
  • ·  George Washington Bridge Bus Station
  • ·  Outerbridge Crossing
  • ·  Holland Tunnel
  • ·  Lincoln Tunnel
  • ·  Port Authority Midtown Bus Terminal
  • ·  Bayonne Bridge
  • ·  Goethals Bridge

The submissions will be judged by a panel of Port Authority employees in the Tunnels, Bridges & Terminals department, which oversees the agency’s vehicular crossings and bus facilities. It will include department leadership and facility managers of the Port Authority Midtown Bus Terminal and the George Washington Bridge Bus Station.  The submissions will be grouped for judging in three categories: elementary school (Pre-K – grade 4), middle school (grades 5-8), and high school (grades 9-12).

Winners will be announced on the Port Authority’s centennial on April 30, which will be 100 years to the date that the compact created by Congress was signed by the states of New York and New Jersey in the Great Hall of the New York State Chamber of Commerce Building on Liberty Street in downtown Manhattan. The historic compact stipulated the Port Authority’s mission to oversee the creation of vital infrastructure to serve the New York-New Jersey metropolitan region within 25 miles around the Statue of Liberty, known as the Port District.

Winning submissions will be displayed on digital screens at the Port Authority Midtown Bus Terminal and the George Washington Bridge Bus Station through the end of May. Tens of thousands of commuters use the two bus facilities daily.

For more information on the poster contest, including terms and conditions, and the submission process, please visit the 2021 Earth Month poster contest website.
